Hip Hop Workshop for teens with special needs
The last Thursday, we had the incredible opportunity to host a hip hop workshop for teens with special needs. This hour-long workshop was more than just a dance class; it was a journey of empowerment, self-expression, and inclusion. Here's a glimpse into the experience we shared:
After introductions and song requests, we began stretching to prepare our muscles for the large amount of dancing we would do later. We had discussion about the importance of stretching to stay safe before and after dancing. Next, we explored a variety of across-the-floor combinations, practicing jumps and kicks. We then paused for a well-deserved snack break. It was a moment of connection and getting to know each other more while replenishing our energy. To prepare for the dance we would learn later on the students were taught some hip-hop moves. From intricate footwork to spins, they embraced the challenge with excitement and perseverance. With the newly learned skills, the students were ready to learn the dance. We integrated our hip hop moves into a dance routine set to the beat of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. In a moment of creative exploration, we experimented with changing the music to other songs selected by the students, including tracks by Taylor Swift. This playful exercise allowed us to explore the rhythm and flow of different genres. To conclude our workshop, we ventured into a more graceful side of dancing through learning pirouettes and chaines. With determination and focus, the students did a great job and progressed wonderfully.
Ballet Bridges’ hip hop workshop for teens with special needs was filled with discovery, unity, and joy. From stretching and warm-ups to mastering pirouettes, every moment was infused with enthusiasm and determination. We embraced challenges, learned new skills, and celebrated the power of movement to uplift and unite us.
